This position is primarily responsible for mechanical engineering for a wide variety of projects in the fields of industrial components (metal stampings, castings, and machining) as well as consumer electronics and OTC medical device products (plastic and metal enclosures, solenoid valves, pumps and motors).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides input to set engineering direction on new projects.
  • Establishes technical approach, selects materials, conducts design reviews and creates and executes test plans. With existing products, will work in a value and manufacturing engineering capacity, reviewing prints, materials selection and manufacturing methods to assure accuracy, cost control and manufacturability.
  • Collaborates with and advises engineers and designers from client companies.
  • Works as a key part of the product realization team, establishing technical approach, evaluating risk and providing mechanical engineering solutions that meet or exceed the established product requirements.
  • Reviews and selects materials, finishes and manufacturing methods for plastics, metals and electro-mechanical components such as solenoid valves, pumps and motors that meet product, customer and government regulatory requirements.
  • Works with regulatory and program management staff to ensure mechanical engineering and design meets government regulatory guidelines and requirements.
  • Collaborates with electrical engineering and design to specify and create electro-mechanical parts, assemblies and products.
  • Collaborates with clients and mechanical designers to specify and/or review mechanical drawings and electro-mechanical assemblies for accuracy, cost management and manufacturability.
  • Works with mechanical designers and outside suppliers to create, modify and assess part and/or product prototypes.
  • Reviews proposed manufacturing processes, dies and tooling to ensure efficient, accurate and cost-effective production of parts and products.
  • Prepares and executes design verification tests ensuring product requirements have been fulfilled by execution of the technical approach.
  • Researches and evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, manufacturing procedures & processes and/or equipment.
  • Leads or participates in design reviews, ensuring product requirements are met, engineering intent is maintained, and risks are mitigated prior to release for tooling and production.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; and one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong design and manufacturing knowledge of plastics (enclosures and precision parts), stamping, casting and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Strong materials knowledge for plastics and metals.
  • Working knowledge of electronic packaging (circuit board level), cables and connectors.
  • Experience with solenoid valves, dc motors and pumps desirable (but not required).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with, support and direct mechanical design, review CAD models, part drawings and BOMs for accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Willingness to work with electronic document and project management systems to track work product, deliverables and progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide complete and accurate work product; material selection, designs, drawings and other documents that accurately reflect product requirements and transition smoothly into production.

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • REASONING ABILITY:
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS:

    • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Development Software; Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Design Software; Project Management Software; Word Processing Software (Word); Electronic Mail Software (Outlook); Presentation software (PowerPoint); and InView and ATR.
